NDHS Sports Medicine Qualifies for State Competition

WTSMS (West Texas Sports Medicine Society) State Qualifiers
Six students involved in NDHS Student athletic training program / Sports Medicine class QUALIFIED FOR STATE COMPETITION to be held later this spring!!! Students were informed and invited to attend the West Texas Sports Medicine Symposium for student trainer aides held at TTUHSC in Lubbock on January 20th, 2024. Jayden Davila, Maddison Larrentree, Shea Powell, Payten Price, Mariah Torrez and Colt Ramsey attended and represented NDHS well!
Teams consisted of 8 members of student athletic training programs from their respected schools (2A – 6A) across the region. All classifications competed against each other! The top three teams qualified to compete at State. The team of New Deal consists of Jayden Davila, Maddison Larrentree, Shea Powell, Payten Price, Mariah Torrez and Colt Ramsey and one representative from Floydada - Mia Snowden, and Monterey - Ashtyn Gonzales.
The teams were tested on their knowledge and skills by having competitions in “The Quiz Bowl” (94 questions relating to sports medicine topics), “Anatomy Challenge”, and the student trainer Olympics consisting of a “taping challenge” and “relay race.” The relay race involved crutch fitting/use of crutches, splinting, identifying sports medicine supplies, and much more. Each team is judged/received points on knowledge and proficiencies of skills. The team for New Deal finished in FIRST PLACE having the highest point total. Midland Legacy placed second, and Frenship placed third.
2023 was the Inaugural Season for State Competitions for Student Trainer Aides. It is organized and sponsored by TSATA (Texas State Athletic Trainers Association). "I am super proud and excited for our students!" said athletic trainer/sports medicine instructor Jill Carver. "They accomplished a great feat by placing first in the competition, competing against student trainer aides from 2A-6A!"
New Deal High School is super proud of these students and their instructor on this huge accomplishment, and we wish them luck in their future competitions!
